When a Buddha Becomes a Buddha
2024
Photography, Moving Image
This project examines the shifting status of Buddhist statues within contemporary consumer culture. As sacred imagery increasingly circulates through digital and commercial networks, the distinction between devotional object and consumable image becomes increasingly unstable.
Photographed in factories where Buddhist statues are produced, these unfinished figures occupy an ambiguous state between commodity and icon. Through documenting this transitional moment, the work investigates the relationship between Buddhism and capitalism, questioning how spiritual value is constructed and when an object becomes invested with religious meaning.
Drawing from personal experiences within a Buddhist cultural context, the project reflects upon changing forms of worship and image consumption, exploring the fragile boundary between materiality and belief, humanity and divinity.
